| Workplace Violence is Manageable |
Workplace violence is increasing dramatically and no company is immune. A 1993 study by a leading life insurance company found that each year, 1 out of every 4 workers were subject to attacks, threats, or harassment at the workplace. According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), over 750 workplace homicides occur annually. Clearly, cost prevention plans and employee safety warrant increased attention to this problem.
In 1970, the Occupational Safety and Health Act was passed, mandating that employers (including PEOs) provide their employees a workplace free from recognized hazards likely to cause death or serious harm. The issue of workplace safety is within the scope of the PEO and represents one of the PEO’s significant benefits to the clients.
We can help by examining the client’s exposure to violence by strangers, customer/clients, co-workers, and relatives. We can implement programs to abate employee tension and avoid external conflict. Other safety options include installing additional lighting, closing the establishment during high risk hours, increasing the number of staff on duty, or establishing cash minimums. In addition, we can initiate significant changes in the psychology of the workplace through Employee Assistance Programs (EAP’s), sexual harassment policies, and verbal abuse training.
With our help, you can make workplace violence a manageable problem.
