| Violence in the Workplace: Prepare Now To Reduce the Risks |
A frightening new statistic has emerged in the United States. Workplace violence is now the fastest growing type of homicide in the nation. What used to be fodder for jokes about Postal Service Employees is no longer a laughing matter. Human Resource managers nationwide have become concerned about how best to protect worksite employees.
As in most cases, one of the best cures is prevention. Potentially violent workers can often be weeded out in the hiring process. One publication recommends that a candidate’s references always be checked, and indicates that the most important question you can ask former employers is, “Would this person be considered for rehire?” While many former employees are reluctant to respond negatively to probing questions about a former employee, most will answer this question honestly.
In addition, your company should outline in advance what measures will be taken regarding inappropriate treatment of co-workers.
One of the advantages of outsourcing your human resource needs to us is your ability to access staff members who have been trained to deal with violence and can instruct your workplace supervisors. Employee training should cover issues like stress management, dealing with confrontations in the workplace, and recognizing potentially dangerous situations.
