| Violence Warning Signs: You can reduce risks by knowing what behaviors to watch for |
Warning signs that will tip you off when you have a potential violence problem with an employee are sometimes obvious:
- unshakable depression
- poor-on-the-job relationships
- unusual or changed behavior patterns
- evidence of substance abuse
- evidence of severe stress
But other warning signs may be more subtle. Watch employees who exhibit the following warning signs as well:
- attendance problems
- quality of work is inconsistent
- employee depends excessively upon advice from supervisors about how to handle personal problems
- has problems concentrating or following directions
- disregards safety procedures, or is careless about others’ safety
- has an unusual fascination with guns or other weapons
- has had a dramatic change in personal hygiene or health
- refuses to accept blame for even the smallest errors
Any combination of these warning signs could be cause for concern. In addition, because these “symptoms” are common in substance abusers, or victims of domestic abuse, there may be danger from an outside perpetrator. Contact us immediately if you have concerns about any of your employees. We can help you eliminate many risks.
