Slow Economy Breeds Employee Burnout: How temporary staffing can help
Bob was a corporate controller supervising a bustling payroll department last year.  But with tough times, his payroll staff was cut from seven employees to four.  “We are expected to accomplish the same amount of work with about half of the help we used to have,” says Bob.  “In the beginning, most of us were willing to put in extra hours and take shorter lunch breaks.  We were just grateful we still had jobs.  But we can’t keep up that pace forever.  All of us are showing signs of wear and tear.  It’s one of the most frustrating experiences I’ve ever had.”

The “wear and tear” Bob speaks of, known as employee burnout, is common in a slow economy, and according to experts, it produces a lot of “hidden costs” that significantly affect a company’s bottom line.

Lower Morale

An obvious ramification of expecting too much from employees is a decrease in employee morale.  Employees who are putting in too much time at work are probably also feeling overwhelmed at home.  Lack of sleep, strained relationships, and mounting stress make for poor co-worker relations.  The obvious consequence is decreased productivity, as employees “work more, but less effectively.

More Accidents, Higher Healthcare Costs

Company safety usually suffers when employees are overworked, as well.  Psychologists at Washington State University-Vancouver discovered that the number of injuries commonly increases when employees are concerned about losing their jobs.

Employees tend to try to work faster, but not smarter.  Employees also manifest more health problems when they experience prolonged stress.  That translates to higher insurance premiums and other healthcare costs.

We recommend that you consider ways our company might help you avoid some of the “hidden expenses” that always manifest themselves when you’re trying to accomplish too much with too little manpower.
