| Selling Safety to Employees |
One of the best ways to convince employees of the importance of working safely is to show them the consequences of not working safely. Show them the results of accidents—injuries, lost time, the emotional costs, workers’ compensation and insurance costs—so that they see they’re not the only losers from accidents.
Here is a list of other steps you can take to give your people the right safety attitude:
Be on the lookout for unsafe acts and unsafe conditions. Your actions determine your employees’ behavior, and seeing you on the alert for hazards will encourage employees to be, also.
Bring several employees in on the investigation of accidents. In many cases, investigation of a near-miss can bring people around in forming the proper attitude, especially if they’ve taken the issue of safety lightly in the past.
Make safety an ongoing concern. By having regular safety meetings with your employees, you can help drive home that point that safety is a personal matter.
Insist on proper reporting of all accidents no matter how small they may seem. This will clear up problem spots in a hurry and point up to commitment you have toward safety.
Make “safety attitude” an important factor in general employee performance appraisals. This will make employees more aware that their attitude toward safety plays an active role in how they perform their jobs.
Maintain firm safety discipline. Be consistent in enforcing the rules, and fair when applying your company’s disciplinary procedures.
Talk with employees when they lapse into an unsafe action. Emotional tensions and anxieties can distract employees from their jobs. If you give your people the chance to talk about their problems regarding safety, you can of ten reduce the tensions that have led to such problems on the job.
