| Safety Focus: Slips and Falls |
When you ponder the fact that all of your weight is supported by two mere feet, the idea that you manage to keep your whole body upright is nothing short of miraculous. Most slips or falls can be harmless, but the few exceptions can be dangerous and costly. Keep in mind that most slips and falls are preventable, and a little time investment will spare your employees much pain, and spare you much expense.
- Repair any uneven walkways. Tree roots under sidewalks commonly cause problems. Other structures like stairs ought to be evaluated as well. Have you ever tried to walk up or down a stairway when one of the stairs was just a fraction of an inch higher than the others are? You'll trip every time. Pay attention to structural deficiencies like these, particularly in older buildings that might not have been built to code.
- Ensure that all areas are adequately lighted.
- Step-up your housekeeping. Many falls are a result of spills (grease, water or other fluids). Don't allow ice to build up; use a commercial ice melt product outside in the winter, particularly in entryways. Repair seals that might cause ice build-up outside of freezers
- In areas where fluids commonly accumulate (dishwashing areas, etc.), be sure to provide adequate drainage. Grease spatters from frying equipment also require special care. If necessary, provide your employees with footwear with slip-resistant soles.
- If one of your employees is injured in a fall, be sure that the employee is not forced to return to work prematurely. If an employee stands or walks before adequate healing, overall recuperation will only be prolonged.
