| Nutrition Update: Good nutrition means sticking with the basics |
Here are a couple of nutritional sources that don’t get half of the good publicity they deserve. The University of California, Berkeley Wellness Letter recently disclosed its list of the top 100 foods in the “new nutrition revolution.” It listed ten sources of vital nutrients, then listed the top ten food sources for each. Two foods, wheat (wheat germ and wheat bran) and beans/legumes, combined to make the “top ten list” in six of the ten categories.
Here’s what you’re getting when you “eat your wheat” and “know your beans:”
- Folacin: Known to reduce the risk of certain birth defects and presumed to protect against cervical cancer.
- Zinc: Zinc is vital to the function of your immune system, tissue repair, and your ability to taste and smell.
- Magnesium: Research suggests it reduces the risk of heart disease. It is also combines with calcium to form healthy bones and teeth.
- Fiber: Long appreciated as a source for preventing diverticulitis, diabetes, colon cancer, and heart disease, fiber is Selenium: Wheat germ is a great source for this mineral. New research suggests that adequate intake of selenium may protect against lung, colon and prostate cancers.
- Potassium: A cup of cooked beans or legumes can provide you with a significant dose of this mineral, which helps lower high blood pressure, reducing the risk of stroke.
Other vital nutrients included Vitamin C, Vitamin B6, Beta Carotene and Calcium.
