Holiday Cheer--Holiday Bonus
In an era of fast-changing perks and employee retention gimmicks, it’s nice to know there are still a few “basics” to count on.  For most companies, the annual “Holiday Bonus” (which is the politically correct version of the “Christmas Bonus”) is a much-anticipated holiday event.  Here are some new ideas to consider:

Don’t wait until after the holidays

Many employers budget up to a full week’s pay for each employee’s gift.  This amount is “bonused” as part of December’s first paycheck—in time for employees to use it for extra holiday expenses.  Imagine knowing exactly what your bonus will be before you spend it!

Offer a gift certificate

A gift certificate to a nearby mall or shopping center or even to a popular grocery store chain is a gift that almost every employee can put to good use.  Instead of the traditional holiday ham, consider a restaurant gift certificate, or even a gift certificate to a store that offers a variety of holiday foods—cheeses, nuts, chocolates, hams, honey-roasted turkeys, and baking mixes.  Even a gift certificate for a cleaning service can be a much-appreciated bonus this time of year!

Bonus your employees some good-will

One company offers time off rather than cash—a benefit some employees prefer over money. Another employer offers a company-wide day off, but specifies that employees use this free day volunteering for their favorite charity.  A traveling camera crew takes live video of participants serving in soup kitchens, reading to school children, stuffing envelopes for United Way and ringing bells for the Salvation Army.  At the end of the day, the entire company meets for a company-sponsored dinner and video show.

Exercising some sensitivity will also help assure that your holiday “gift” is a blessing instead of a burden.  (How many 30-something bachelors do you know who truly appreciate a twenty-pound turkey)?  Our best wishes to you on spreading a little holiday cheer!
