| Hiring Considerations: Tips to helping you find the right candidate |
During a slow economy, while lots of people are looking for jobs, it’s logical to assume that hiring should be a breeze. Hiring managers are generally finding the opposite to be true, however. The glut of available workers poses some disadvantages, and one of the most significant is finding the candidate who is the right “fit” when there are so many options for workers to choose from.
“The market has been tough, and, unlike the past, where candidates would take their time to research a company, its growth potential and benefits package, candidates are now trying to get a foot in the door,” says Melissa Ackerman, a recruiter with the State Teachers Retirement System of Ohio in Columbus. That means that you’ll get dozens, and sometimes hundreds of resumes for every job opening.
Here are a few strategies that can help make a hiring manager’s job easier:
- Be quick about the initial resume screening. Even in a slow economy, the best people are still snatched up almost immediately. If you typically file resumes and look them over at your convenience, you’ll lose out on some of the most talented help.
- Consider a temp-to-hire option to be certain that someone who looks good “on paper” can perform well.
- Don’t cut corners on screening. Look each resume over carefully, and give each candidate due consideration.
- If you find it’s impossible to consider each and every resume, contract with a service that manages some of the pre-screening for you.
- Be conscientious about where you place a job ad. Use your creativity to discover where the talent pool might search for a job. Very often, they’ll come to you.
- Be cautious about using classified ads, which are notorious for providing you with a glut of poorly-qualified candidates. If you do post ads online or in print, be explicit about job descriptions and qualifications.
- Don’t forget to consider the pool of candidates who are currently employed.
- Never forget that you’ll generate some of your best candidates through networking.
